What Causes Drain and Sewer Clogs?

Clogs can happen for a variety of reasons. Some are caused by everyday use, while others are related to the condition of the underground pipe.

Common causes include:

  • Wipes, even wipes labeled “flushable”

  • Feminine hygiene products

  • Paper towels, tissues, and other items that do not break down like toilet paper

  • Hair buildup in tubs, showers, and bathroom sinks

  • Grease, fats, oils, and food debris in kitchen lines

  • Tree roots entering the sewer line

  • Pipe separation, cracks, or collapse

  • Bellies or low spots holding water and debris

  • Old cast iron or clay piping with heavy buildup

If a clog keeps coming back, there may be more happening than a simple blockage. A sewer camera inspection can help identify whether the issue is buildup, roots, pipe damage, improper slope, or another concern.

Main Line Sewer Cleaning Includes a Camera Inspection

For main sewer line services, DBS includes a sewer camera inspection as part of the process.

Once the line is open, the camera allows us to look at the condition of the pipe and check for roots, buildup, offsets, cracks, bellies, or other concerns. This helps confirm the line has been cleared and gives you better information about what caused the backup.

We believe homeowners should not have to guess about the condition of their sewer line. When possible, we will show and explain what we see so you can make an informed decision.

More Than Just Opening the Line

Sometimes a traditional cable machine is the right tool for the job. Other times, a line may need a deeper cleaning option.

Depending on the condition of the pipe, DBS may recommend:

  • Traditional drain cleaning to open the line and restore flow

  • Hydrojetting to flush grease, sludge, roots, soft debris, or buildup from qualifying lines

  • Descaling or sewer line reconditioning for cast iron, heavy buildup, roots, or rough pipe walls that are catching debris

  • Repair options if the camera shows breaks, severe offsets, collapse, backfall, or other pipe condition concerns

Not every sewer problem needs excavation. Not every line needs hydrojetting. The right recommendation depends on what is happening inside the pipe.
