What Is a Sump Pump — and Why Does It Matter?

If you’re like many homeowners in Northern Kentucky, you may have heard the term “sump pump” without being entirely sure what it does. That’s okay — we’re here to help.

A sump pump is a device installed in the lowest part of your basement or crawl space. Its job is simple but crucial: it pumps out water that collects in a sump pit (a small, specially dug basin), helping to keep your basement dry and your foundation protected. It’s especially important in areas where heavy rains or rising groundwater are common — like right here in the Ohio River Valley.

When Does a Sump Pump Run?

Sump pumps kick into action when water enters the pit — typically during:

  • Heavy rainstorms

  • Melting snow

  • High water tables

  • Foundation drainage

The pump turns on automatically and pushes the water outside, away from your home’s foundation.

What If the Power Goes Out?

That’s where a battery backup comes in.

Most sump pumps rely on electricity. So what happens during a thunderstorm when the power goes out — the exact time you need your pump the most?

A battery backup system gives you peace of mind. It keeps pumping water even when the power’s out, helping prevent basement flooding during the worst conditions.

Do You Need a Battery Backup?

It depends on your situation.

  • Unfinished basement with concrete floors? A traditional sump pump may be all you need — especially if your area rarely loses power.

  • Finished basement with carpet, drywall, furniture, or storage? A battery backup is a smart investment. It helps protect your home from expensive damage when the power fails.

  • Frequent power outages during storms? We strongly recommend a battery backup in these homes.
